The Osprey, also known as the fish hawk or the river hawk specializes in fishing and has adaptations such as reversible outer toes and a diet of almost entirely fish. It has a unique ability to dive into the water to catch its prey. On the other hand, hawks are a diverse group of birds with various hunting techniques and diets. They typically hunt small mammals, birds, and reptiles and are known for their powerful flight and keen eyesight. Setting Out: The Bird Photography

On numerous occasions during the early and late winter days, my wife and I would embark on our journey from Durgapur, setting our alarms for the early morning hour of 4 am. We knew that to reach our destination; we needed to start early to ensure we had ample time to capture the nature photography.

Navigating the Journey

Upon reaching Nauka Ghat, our starting point, we would embark on a two-hour boat ride, expertly guided by local boatmen, deep into the Ganga River. As we ventured further into the river, the anticipation built, knowing that the Osprey could emerge from the sky at any moment, carrying its prized fish.

The Boatman’s Role in The Bird Images

I cannot stress enough the importance of the boatmen in our pursuit. These individuals were not merely boatmen but caring companions, understanding the significance of our mission. They would row tirelessly, often against the strong currents of the Ganga, ensuring we were positioned at the best possible angles for our photography. Their expertise and dedication were instrumental in the success of our venture.

The Wait

Once positioned in the heart of the river, we would wait patiently, our cameras poised and ready. The silence was interrupted only by the rhythmic sounds of water lapping against the boat and the occasional bird call from the surrounding mangroves. Every passing moment increased our anticipation and sharpened our focus.

The Arrival

Then, as if out of nowhere, the Osprey would materialize, soaring gracefully through the air. Time seemed to stand still as we witnessed Osprey’s incredible hunting skills, diving into the water with precision and emerging with a fish securely clutched in its talons. The sight was awe-inspiring, and our cameras clicked incessantly, capturing every fleeting moment.

A testament to our unwavering dedication and the prowess of Osprey.

Enduring the challenges and hardships of the journey to photograph the bird Osprey was all worthwhile when we witnessed it’s sheer magnificence up close. The dedication required to wake early, endure boat rides and brave unpredictable weather was rewarded with moments of pure magic.
