Achieving the Rare Feat: 140+ Hours of Flying

This opportunity led her to achieve a remarkable feat—logging more than 140 hours of flying as a co-pilot of the world renowned Suryakiran Aerobatice team that flies nine aircraft in formation. I did not get Flying Branch but I got rarest of the rare opportunity to fly with the team. This taught me another life lesson….Never give up on your dreams and keep striving, for they come true one way or the other.”

Mountaineering and Cycling Expeditions: Conquering Mount Everest and More

Gp Capt Bhavana Mehra’s adventurous spirit extends beyond the skies. Her passion for mountaineering and cycling has led her to conquer challenging peaks and embark on expeditions that push the boundaries of human endurance.

Cycling Expeditions: Pushing the Limits

“As a Class XI student, I first read in a newspaper about Khardung La, the world’s highest motorable road.” She recalls. “I promised myself to climb it on a bicycle so that I would cause the least disturbance and pollution to the environment.” This early fascination with the mountains ignited a passion that would shape her life.

Deccan Cliffhanger: Conquering India’s Signature Ultracycle Race

“The real challenge lay in Southeast Ladakh, i.e., from Upshi (about 50 km short of Leh), where we turned southeast, covering Kiari, Chumathang, Loma, Nyoma, Chushul, Pangan Tso, crossing Chang La, reaching Leh, and culminating at Khardung La.”

Bhavana further adds, “We were so well acclimatized and fit that we could comfortably swim and cycle in the icy waters of Pangong Tso at an altitude of 15,500 ft.”

Mountaineering: Reaching New Heights

Gp Capt Mehra’s passion for mountaineering began with a fascination for Khardung La, the world’s highest motorable road, about which she read in the newspaper as a 11th standard student. At 16, she embarked on a solo cycling trip to Khardung La but soon realized that she needs to do better planning and must have an insight knowledge of mountains for such expeditions.

This realization led her to pursue a Basic Mountaineering Course from NIM in 1993. At the age of 17, she planned and successfully completed her first expedition from Jallandhar to Khardung La along with a team of her seven friends. “What I didn’t know then was that just a couple of people had attempted Khardung La by bicycle. There were no paved roads and facilities on the Manali-Leh route. We carried all our clothing, cooking utensils, even kerosene stove, tents, cycle repair kit etc on the bicycle carriers.” For greater and more challenging expeditions she did Advanced Mountaineering Course in year 2000.

Her dedication and skills were recognized, not only earning her an A grade in the Advanced Mountaineering Course but also a recommendation for an instructor’s course.  This marked a significant step in her mountaineering journey, as she was able to share her knowledge and passion with others, further contributing to the field.

Breaking New Ground: All Women Tri-Services Mountaineering Expedition

The expedition team, led by Wing Commander Bhavana Mehra, successfully summited Mt. Manirang (21,625 ft) on August 15, 2021, marking a significant milestone. Nestled between Kinnaur and Spiti districts in Himachal Pradesh, Mt. Manirang is the highest peak of the Spiti Valley. This feat highlights the determination and resilience of the 15-member team, who hoisted the national flag atop the peak.

IAF Milan Expedition: A Journey of Unity

IAF entrusted then Wg Cdr Bhavana Mehra to plan and execute first ever bicycle expedition in the region from DBO to Delhi. The expedition was the Northern segment of the IAF Milan Expedition of 2016, wherein cycling teams from all four extremities of our Country culminated the expedition at New Delhi on the occasion of Air Force Day on 08 Oct 2016.

Daulat Beg Oldie is an Advance Landing Ground in Northernmost part of Ladakh, nestled in valley just below Karakoram pass at an altitude of 16,700 ft. It’s approach is through the Depsang La pass at the height of 18,000 ft.

Historically it was one of the campsites on the old Silk Route, one of the toughest journeys ever undertaken by mankind. Currently, it holds great strategic importance in the region with Aksai Chin on the eastern and POK on the western flank.

DBO stands as a testament to the audacious, resilient and persisting human spirit, in the face of nature’s formidable challenges. The expedition was particularly challenging due to the high altitude and difficult terrain. For about 180 Kms there was no road and the team had to negotiate through the river bed of Sheyok river. Mehra meticulously planned and led a 23 member team, wherein she was the only female member.

From DBO to Delhi they negotiated rough inhospitable terrain and seven tough passes, i.e.. Depsang La, Khardung La, Tanglang La, Lachlung La, Nakki La, Baralacha La and Rohtang. This daring and first of it’s kind pathbreaking expedition exemplified teamwork, resilience, and above all the tough resolve of IAF to achieve the unachievable.

“Barring three of us, all other members of my entire team were first timers in the mountains and the  19 cyclists were a bunch of fit people with great will power and enthusiasm. It was an honour to lead them and see them break their own mental, physical and emotional barriers in the most trying conditions of their lives. With this expedition, IAF became the first team ever to reach DBO on bicycles” she muses with pride.

Mount Everest Expedition: A Test of Resilience

Everest, the world’s highest peak, is a dream for many mountaineers. For Gp Capt Mehra, it was also an opportunity to pave the way for other women mountaineers in the IAF. In 2011, she was the Deputy Leader of the first mixed IAF expedition to Mount Everest. The expedition was gruelling, both physically and mentally.

Despite facing challenges, including contracting a high fever and a throat infection, Gp Capt Mehra persevered. However, when she began spitting blood, she made the difficult decision to turn back from Camp I, prioritizing her health and her team’s safety.

She reflects. “When the stakes are high the distinction of right and wrong that is so pronounced in the comfort of our homes gets blurred.” Her experience on Everest reinforced the importance of teamwork, resilience, and moral courage. Gp Capt Mehra’s journey to Everest and her decision remains a testament to her strength and determination.  She has conquered challenging terrains herself, created opportunities and motivated others to realise their own potential.

Courage, Health, and Resilience: Keys to Overcoming Challenges

Mehra also emphasizes the importance of courage, self-belief, and overcoming the fear of failure. Reflecting on her values and determination, she begins humming the lines-

Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Eh Hai,
Subh Karman Te Kabho Na Taron,

Nischay Kar Apni Jeet Karon

This verse of Guru Gobind Singh ji is mentioned in Dasam Granth. She explains that these verses encourage us to walk the path of righteousness. It further inspires one to be fearless in the face of challenges and stay determined to be always victorious.

For Mehra, poetry provides an outlet for emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express otherwise. “At times, we are unable to speak up or express ourselves, and burying such emotions can lead to depression or ailments,” she explains. “When we cannot express something for whatever reason, it’s best to let it flow through our creativity.”

She encourages everyone to find time for their hobbies and creative pursuits, regardless of how busy their lives may be. “I’m sure we can all find time for ourselves and our creativity, no matter how busy we are,” she says. “Even a moment of self-expression through creativity is enough to keep our spirits high for weeks.”

Mehra’s own experience with poetry exemplifies this.
